Teachers

Yesterday, I (Josiah) was sitting in East Coast Taco with Nicolette & Nikki after a day of shooting. I was eating a gigantic chicken fajita covered in melted cheese and we started talking about the technical aspects of filmmaking and photography. I found myself attempting to explain shutter speed both for photography and for filmmaking, aperture, ISO and as I was sitting there “teaching” I realized that this was really rewarding.

We are self taught photographers…to an extent. The only class we have taken was film/digital photography in high school. Everything else we have learned by doing and reading on google. We began scouring other photographer’s blogs for new things to learn about our cameras, off camera flash, editing, business and anything else that deals with photography.

Steph graduated with an elementary education degree and teaching has been her goal since she was kid. I never considered myself a teacher because I never thought I would be at the point to where I knew enough about one particular area where I could teach another person. Last night was kind of an eye opening experience where I realized that I did not just understand the concepts that I have been studying, but that I could explain how it specifically works and what it does.

That being said, I want to put this teaching thing to practice. My dad has a Nikon D3100. He knows absolutely nothing about photography, but has such an interest in learning his camera. So Dad, this is for you and anyone else who wants to learn! We will be starting a new blog series called Photography 101. It will cover the basic aspects of photography: Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO, Composition, etc… It is a blog for people who know nothing, a little or just want a refresher on the technical side.

Keep an eye out for the first post!
