Engagement at a Blueberry Farm in Hammonton, NJ

Nick + Kate

We had such a wonderful time photographing Nick + Kate’s engagement at her family’s blueberry farm and home in Hammonton, New Jersey last week. The weather was perfect; the light was gorgeous, and these two were so easy to photograph. We met Kate a few years back when she was a bridesmaids at Matt + Angela’s wedding at Knowlton Mansion in Philly. If you know her even just a little bit, you know that her smile is infectious and that it feels like she is constantly laughing or giggling. At least, that’s what our experience with her has been both times she was in front of our camera. That definitely was the case during their session as both her and Nick gave off such happy vibes. I dare you to look at these photos and not smile back. I certainly caught myself smiling while editing them and that just goes to show how happy these two are together and the joy they share with those around them.

Q: How did Nick propose?

Nick and I got engaged on December 18, 2019. The night of the proposal, I was running late for dinner after work, and Chef Nick was already finishing up with cooking pasta (shiitake mushrooms, onions, cream sauce, Parmesan…yum) when I arrived at his house. I went to get a serving bowl out of a cabinet and saw a display set up with a ring box inside. Instead of gasping or telling him what I saw (like a normal person), I immediately closed the cabinet and looked at him to see if he noticed. When I saw that he didn’t, I thought, “Should I tell him?” before immediately pivoting to, “Let’s see how this plays out!” Our relationship’s built on us messing with each other, so it only seemed right.  He asked me to get a bowl out of the cabinet a few times, and I kept skirting around it, even suggesting that we just eat the pasta right out of the pot. I eventually told him that I saw the display, then asked if I could take a picture of it before we opened the ring box. As I was doing that, he was getting down on one knee behind me, with the ring…that he had hidden in a cookie jar on the other side of the kitchen. Shocked that he tricked me when I thought that I had tricked him, I’m about 90% sure I said, “You jackass!” (I don’t even curse often!) before saying yes.

Ah, love.

Q: What is the best part of being engaged?

We’ve mulled over this question for two days to avoid giving a cheesy cliché answer. We failed. Our favorite part of being engaged is simply celebrating the fact that we get to spend the rest of our lives together. We’re sappy people who are just really thankful to have found each other.

Q: Any advice for the couples out there planning their weddings?

“Plan quickly!” – Expert advice from us, two people who haven’t planned anything since they got engaged a year and a half ago. Pandemic restrictions definitely made us hesitant to book anything, but most of our friends and family members who got engaged during this time were able to plan their weddings pretty quickly. Be like them!

To Nick + Kate:

Thanks for trusting us with these photos! We loved photographing you both and hope we get the chance to do so again sometime in the future. Special thanks to your family for sending us home with food, too! Your families are so incredibly sweet and we see that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. We can’t wait to share all of your photos with you, but until then we hope you enjoy some of our favorites from your engagement session at your family’s cute blueberry farm in Hammonton, NJ!
