Engagement Session at Longwood Gardens

Duncan + Sarah

We had such a fun time with Duncan and Sarah during their engagement session at Longwood Gardens last week! It was a beautiful night and Longwood Gardens is just such a beautiful location! Sarah really loves this place and so shooting their session here was a no brainer! Duncan + Sarah did such an awesome job in front of camera. They’re both so fun, quirky, and really cute together. We think you’ll be able to see their love and joy in the photos below.

Q: How did Duncan propose?

We were dating long distance, and I had just moved out to Oak Harbor, WA to be with him after the pandemic hit. My industry closed and I figured if I had to bunker down, I would rather bunker down with him. We had talked about getting engaged and even picked out a ring together (he wanted to make sure I liked it). But I didn’t know when it was arriving or when he was going to formally ask me, so in that sense, I was surprised! He gets a little embarrassed when I tell the story, but loved every moment of it!

We went sailing with his father, it was a gorgeous sunny day. We were just getting out of the sound when I noticed he was getting really fidgety and more quiet than usual. He took me to the bow and enjoyed the view and the sea air. Finally, we stood up, he took both my hands, looked me right in the eyes, and began to speak; then his father yelled for him to come help with some ropes. I couldn’t help but laugh!

Duncan forgot to tell his father exactly when he was going to propose, and the wind was so loud that he couldn’t tell that Duncan had started! He told me to not move and to wait, I did (though bouncing with excitement) as he ran to the stern, helped his father (and probably told him what was happening), then came right back. He took my hands again, looked in my eyes and then cursed cause he had lost his momentum. With a box engraved with, “you are my destiny”, he got on one knee and proposed. What followed was sweet, and sincere, and not the most practiced, but it was perfect.

Q: What’s the best part about being engaged?

Knowing that we both want to be together forever. – Duncan

Q: Any advice you can share with other couples planning their weddings?

What I have been learning in this planning process is that our wedding can be anything we want it to be. It can be difficult to do, but don’t let the expectations of others (family, friends, or society) force you to do anything you don’t want to do. It is your day!
